Fusion of Bandhani & Ajrakh in Saree from Chakor

Embark on a captivating journey through the folklore of Bandhani and Ajrakh, a fusion of ancient crafts from the arid landscapes of the Rann of Kutch. Rooted in Kachchh's rich cultural heritage, it narrates an enchanting story, blending age-old crafts seamlessly to create timeless pieces resonating with tradition and innovation.

Ajrakh and Bandhani, two ancient crafts from Gujarat, epitomise the rich heritage of Indian textiles. Bandhani, also known as Bandhej, stands as a revered art form showcasing age-old mastery in tie-dye techniques. Small portions of fabric are tied with threads to create intricate patterns before dyeing, resulting in cultural glam and festive flair. Ajrakh, an Eco-friendly block printing technique, is renowned for its intricate designs and vibrant earthy colours, adorning textiles with timeless elegance. Together, these crafts transcend time, reflecting the pinnacle of skill and tradition in the tapestry of Indian textiles.

History

The roots of Bandhani, derived from the Sanskrit word "bandh" meaning "to bind," can be traced back over 5,000 years, making it one of India's oldest textile traditions. Originating in the Indus Valley civilisation, Bandhani evolved into a refined art form passed down through generations. It gained popularity in the 18th century, initially among Rajasthan's royal families and later among common people, symbolizing prosperity and happiness in Hindu weddings and festivals. Ajrakh, dating back over 4,000 years, also originates from the Indus Valley. Derived from the Arabic "Azrak" (blue) and Sindhi "aj rakh" (keep it for today), Ajrakh is renowned for its intricate, labour-intensive block printing, preserved and refined through generations.

Artisan Story

Our Crafted Folklore collection is a testament to the dedication and skill of our team of artisans from the Khatri community of Kutch. Each piece is crafted by skilled hands that have inherited these ancient techniques through generations. Meet Akhtar Ji, a master artisan from Kutch in Gujarat, who learned the craft from his elders. Specialising in Ajrakh hand-block prints, he meticulously follows traditional methods passed down by his ancestors. As an integral part of the Khatri community, he witnessed Bandhani closely since childhood, understanding the key processes and limitations of both crafts. Although he masters Ajrakh, he possesses vast knowledge and experience in tie-dye as well. His in-depth knowledge and expertise helped bring our collection from design sketches to reality.
